William playing the piano

William Benjamin graduated from the Piano Hospital & Training Center in 1972. This is a two-year vocational school teaching piano tuning and rebuilding to the blind. All of the instructors are blind, so this is a hands on teaching environment.

Upon graduating William joined the Piano Technicians Guild and received their highest Certification. When the Piano Technicians Guild PTG developed their present testing procedure, William took the new test's in; tuning, regulation and repair. William was the first blind person to pass these test's and now has paved the way for other blind piano technicians.

William established his place of business in Eureka Calif. where he opened a full service piano business. Along with new and used pianos, william performed, restringing, refinishing and complete rebuilding of pianos. He also handled a contract with Humboldt State University where he tuned inventory pianos. William also tuned for the College Concert Series and quickly established himself as a concert tuner.

While working for Sherman Clay, a Steinway dealership William tuned for the Artist Concert Series. He also prepared new Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai and other pianos for the display floor. Along with this, he tuned new pianos after they were delivered to the home and would trouble shoot problems.

In 1997 William returned to the Piano Hospital and taught piano tuning and rebuilding to blind students. He taught the business classes as well as writing many lesson plans for the various classes. He also tuned in the customers home and mentored students tuning for the first time outside of the school.

Now William has come to Tallahassee, his wife's hometown. Offering new and used pianos he also provides a full service tuning and rebuilding business. Sally and William manage the business on there own and offer advice and counseling to other blind and visually impaired persons starting there own career.
