Often I get called upon to tune a piano and evaluate if it is working alright. Usually, it is when the piano has not been used for some time, but now the piano needs to be put back into working condition: When this happens, a fare and candid appraisal of the instrument is needed.
Many times, I find that the piano just needs some TLC: clean, tightening, lubrication and regulating, to make it play and sound better. Not every piano needs a complete rebuilding and with just a little maintenance it can be a very serviceable instrument.
When the Piano Boutique performs a general, action and key upgrade, the piano does not have to be moved. The action and keys are taken out of the piano and brought to our shop to be cleaned and serviced. When the work in the shop is completed, the parts are returned to the piano and the instrument is cleaned, regulated, tuned and voiced to the best of it's ability.
Vertical piano action and keys do follow a common thread, so we use a general checklist to be sure everything is serviced. This includes, but is not limited to: cleaning and shaping the hammers, replacing the bridle straps, tightening the screws, lubricating the friction points, repairing broken parts and reassembling the action. Some times key tops need to be replaced and or the bushings replaced. Regardless, every action and keys are completely serviced to perform as close as possible to the manufacture specifications.
When we return the action and keys to the piano, we clean the key bed, back and bottom of the instrument. Key frame felts can be replaced if they are worn or damaged. We regulate: key level and dip, capstans, let off and back checks; then tune and voice the piano. Not every piano needs everything. When we find actions with perfectly good bridle straps, there is no need to replace them.
